Turkish airstrike kills 30 people

10:04 pm on 29 December 2011

An air strike near a Kurdish village by Turkish warplanes close to the border with Iraq has left at least 30 people dead.

One report says smugglers had been spotted by unmanned drones and mistaken for Kurdish rebels.

The attack took place near a village in south-eastern Turkey.

Local officials say drums of diesel carried by the group had exploded.

Turkish warplanes strike militant targets regularly in the region in their battle against Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) guerrillas, and have stepped up raids after a PKK attack in August.
