About 3000 women held a protest rally in Malawi over assaults on women for wearing trousers.

Several women in the city of Blantyre have been attacked by street vendors who beat and stripped them for not wearning traditional dress.

A BBC reporter says women wore trousers and mini-skirts to the demonstration to show their outrage.

The Malawian president has declared on national television that women have the right to choose how they dress.
