The two rival Palestinian factions, Fatah and Hammas, have agreed that President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah will head an interim government to organise elections in the West Bank and Gazza Strip.
The arrangement was negotiated during talks in Qatar between Mr Abbas and Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal.
The BBC reports negotiations were long and tortuous. Hamas took over control of the Gaza Strip in 2007, following conflict with Fatah, whose politicians retreated to the West Bank.
