McDonald's aims to get sow crates phased out in US

5:28 am on 15 February 2012

McDonald's says it will work with its United States pork suppliers to phase out crates in which millions of sows are confined while they raise piglets.

McDonald's says the metal crates are not a sustainable production system for the future and it will work with suppliers on a timeline for the phase-out.

A growing list of food producers and retailers including Burger King have promised to move away from pork bred from sows confined to the crates.

Humane Society of the United States president Wayne Pacelle says McDonald's is the largest restaurant chain in the world, so he expects the move to have a seismic effect within the pork industry.
