German MPs back latest Greece bailout

7:06 am on 28 February 2012

German MPs have voted to back the second major international bailout for Greece.

The Bundestag (lower house) voted by 496 to 90 in favour of backing the EU/IMF deal, the BBC reports.

German leader Angela Merkel had urged MPs to endorse the bailout while conceding there is no 100% guarantee it will work.

The deal got through with the support of the opposition Social Democrat and Green parties.

Germany will have to pay more than any other country for the €130 billion package that was agreed on by eurozone states last week.
