The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has hired actor Michael Douglas who played insider trader Gordon Gekko, to help stamp out financial crimes.

Gekko proclaimed that 'Greed is good' in the film Wall Street (1987).

In an advisement, the actor urges viewers who suspect financial crime to contact the FBI.

Douglas says: "Our economy is increasingly dependant on the success and integrity of the financial markets. If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is".

A new report shows that FBI investigations led to 242 indictments and 241 convictions of corporate criminals in the last fiscal year.

The FBI says it secured $US2.4 billion in restitution from corporate criminals.
