Rachel Hyde and David Morriss explore the background to Michael Tippett's pre-war oratorio.

Few British composers have responded as deeply to world events as Michael Tippett.

His oratorio 'A Child of our Time', was an impassioned protest against the persecution and tyranny he saw happening throughout the world in 1939, at the onset of World War II.

In particular it is an artistic and emotional response to the events that led to the 'Kristallnacht' pogrom of November 1938, and the role of Herschel Grynszpan.
