One of Auckland's favourite musical sons, Henry Wong Doe returns to his hometown to perform Rachmaninov's sumptuous Piano Concerto No 2.

Although not intrinsically American itself, the concerto's melodies have been used extensively by Hollywood and coopted by American songwriters.

In this programme, it is bookended by two works written in America: The School for Scandal Overture by Samuel Barber, and Erich Korngold's Symphony in F#, itself redolent of Hollywood melodies.

BARBER: The School for Scandal Overture
RACHMANINOV: Piano Concerto No 2
Eve DE CASTRO-ROBINSON: White Interior #1, from A Zig-Zagged Gaze (encore)
KORNGOLD: Symphony in F#

Recorded in Auckland Town Hall, 9 August 2018
Producer: Tim Dodd
Engineer: Adrian Hollay
