India says it will not interfere in Fiji's internal affairs.

The assurance was given in a meeting in New Delhi between the Indian prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Fiji's minister for multi-ethnic affairs, George Shiu Raj.

Mr Vajpayee said it was best for Fiji to solve its own problems.

The Fiji Sun reports that during the meeting Mr Vajpayee offered assistance to help build harmonious race relations in Fiji.

He also reaffirmed his government's committment to providing assistance and fostering collaboration with Fiji.

Mr Shiu Raj met Mr Vajpayee after a conference in New Delhi of representatives of the Indian community from more than 100 countries.

He said Fiji was committed to setting up a High commission in New Delhi and had set aside funds for the purpose in this year's budget.
