Fiji Citizens Freedom Movement receives death threat

7:24 pm on 16 May 2002

The President of the Fiji Citizens Freedom Movement says there's no use lodging a complaint with police over a death threat he received this week.

James Bachu, who recently launched a complaint with police against the Commander of the military, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, says he has been warned to stop stirring in affairs with high ranking Fijians.

Mr Bachu claims that by abrogating the 1997 constitution in the May 2000 Coup, the commander is guilty of a criminal misdemeanor and should be charged accordingly.

He is unsatisfied that police have deferred the complaint to the Director of Public Prosecution as a civil matter.

Mr Bachu says considering the dead ends he keeps encountering with police, it's futile complaining about a death threat he has received.

"I've just got that two nights ago and since the police have not come up to me in regards to something serious that I have complained to them about it doesn't make any sense making a complaint. I consider the aims and objectives of Fiji citizens for the moment just as important and unless we bring these people back to justice the cause will be happening here again and again"
