3:00 pm on 5 August 2002

Fiji's new chief justice, Daniel Fatiaki, says corruption has increased drastically in the country in the last few years.

Justice Fatiaki is the former chairman of the anti-corruption commission.

Radio FM-96 quotes himn as saying that submissions made to the commission showed that corruption had increased in many government departments.

Justice Fatiaki says the number of cases may have increased after the May 2000 coup when the commission's work was halted.

He says he will start working on his corruption report soon.
