Fiji ombudsman reports many complaints against police

Fiji's Ombudsman, Justice Sailosi Kepa, says more than half of the 237 complaints received last year were about the police and prisons departments.

The Ombudsman's report, tabled in parliament yesterday, shows that complaints about police involved forgery, assault, abuse of drugs, use of unnecessary force, unfair detention, failure to investigate cases and extra-marital affairs.

The report also highlights the Ombudsman's dissatisfaction with the length of time it took the police commissioner, Colonel Isikoia Savua, to investigate cases and reply to his office.

Justice Kepa says in some instances, police showed bias and failed to act with integrity, impartiality and dignity when investigating their own officers.
