Fiji army officer disappears ahead of court martial

A senior Fiji army officer facing court martial for the misuse of public funds has gone missing.

Radio Fiji reports that Major Netani Vunidaiga, is alleged to have used the money for a get-rich-quick Nigerian scam.

The offence occured while he was on peace-keeping duties in East Timor.

He is alleged to have misused more than firty thousand US dollars meant for the building of quarters for Fiji troops in East Timor.

Major Vunidaiga has been charged with nine counts of misusing public funds and one count of disobeying a lawful order.

The radio says the army has been trying to track down the Major for two weeks so he can be brought before a military court.
