Police in Solomon Islands say rebel is using family as shields

6:52 am on 11 November 2002

Police in Solomon Islands say the rebel leader of the Guadalcanal Liberation Front, Harold Keke, is continuing to use members of his family as shields as the police operation to catch him continues on the Weathercoast of Guadalcanal.

The Deputy commissioner of Police Operations, Wilfred Akao, told the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation the police know where Keke is, but are being cautious because of his tactics.

Mr Akao says besides hunting down Keke, police are continuing to rebuild relations with the people of Weathercoast by providing food and other supplies.

He says police are giving Keke one last chance to surrender himself to the authorities.
