Troubled hotel in American Samoa loses electricity again

5:23 pm on 5 March 2003

American's Samoa's troubled Rainmaker Hotel was plunged into darkness last night after the power was disconnected.

It is not the first time the American Samoa Power Authority has cut the supply, but the first time it has remained off throughout the night.

The hotel, which is 80 percent owned by the Territory's Government, has an outstanding bill of nearly half a million US dollars with the Authority.

The Hotel management said recently that it was making regular payments to reduce the debt, but sources within the Authority say this is not true, and that the hotel is also falling behind on its current monthly bills.

As of noon the hotel was still with out power and most workers had gone home.
