PNG bank to challenge Telikom service in court

4:18 pm on 23 April 2003

The Bank of South Pacific in Papua New Guinea is considering taking Telikom PNG to court in its quest for a private satellite communication licence to run its banking services.

BSP's Chief Executive Officer, Noel Smith, says the bank wants the licence because of Telikom's inability to provide reliable telecommunication services for its electronic banking facilities.

Currently Telikom has a five year monopoly in providing telecommunication services in PNG.

The National newspaper reports Mr Smith saying that there are already many cases of people standing in long queues outside banks and automatic teller machines because of the Telikom system break downs.

He says for BSP to get a satellite licence, Telikom must inform the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission that it cannot reliably provide the type of services his bank needs.

Mr Smith says the only way to get that kind of admission from Telikom PNG is to take it to court.
