Kiribati goes to polls today

10:54 am on 9 May 2003

Voting is underway in Kiribati in the second general election in five months.

All the candidates who contested the last election in December are standing again, after the weeks-old administration of Teburoro Tito collapsed in March.

President Tito was ousted when his government lost a budget vote 19 to 21.

Mr Tito, since he has had three terms, can no longer contest the Presidency, and the government has nominated Dr Harry Tong as its Presidential candidate.

The Opposition has not indicated who it will back for the Presidency.

Kiribati's acting chief electoral officer, Rine Ueara, says she expects a good turnout among the more than 43,000 registered voters
