American Samoan Governor tries to discourage wage hike

4:20 pm on 17 June 2003

The American Samoa Governor Togiola Tulafono has urged the Department of Labor's Special Industry Committee not to raise the minimum wage.

Togiola says great steps have been taken to bring the deficit down but there is still a lot to be done to tighten spending and improve the government's fiscal accountability.

Togiola told the committee that cannery workers in the territory are among the highest paid in the world.

Currently the lowest wage category stands at 2-dollars-57 US and the highest minimum is in shipping and transport at 4-dollars.
