PINA meeting underway in Samoa

11:21 am on 29 July 2003

An agreement for the Pacific region's two media associations to merge is proving difficult to implement.

The Pacific Island News Assocation or PINA conference officially began in Samoa today.

Linda Skates reports from Apia.

"The acting prime minister, Misa Telefoni Retslaff, was the keynote speaker at the opening of the conference which gathers together journalists from around the region. The focus of this year's conference is governments, culture, environment and the media. But many delegates are also wondering whether the amalgamation of the two regional media associations, PINA and the Pacific Islands Broadcasting Association, PIBA, will eventuate. They have already agreed to merge, although its implementation is proving more difficult. It's hoped there will be further progress over the next two days before the conference draws to a close."
