Niue's former Director of Health says the hospital needs better laboratory equipment than it has.

Dr Harry Nemaia, who headed the panel investigating allegations against medical practices at the hospital, says sound procedures are in place but more doctors are needed and there's a lack of certain equipment.

Dr Nemaia says he has recommended to cabinet that it should ask New Zealand to supply more doctors and Niue should invest in more equipment.

"Laboratory equipment can do certain blood tests, blood enzymes for cardiac cases, liver function tests, kidney function tests. And the practitioner will appreciate just supporting the clinical"

findings and the prognosis, and also to support the progress of treatment on a case.
