Justice officials in the Cook Islands have struck off more than 250 companies from their register.
They include some of the world's best known companies such as Avis Rent-A-Car and the American cable television network, CNN.
The Cook Island News says the action follows notice under the Companies Act by the Register of Companies for failing to provide an annual return to the Justice ministry.
