Australia still reviewing Nauru detainees

12:01 pm on 23 March 2004

Australia says it is still reviewing the refugee application of some of the Middle Eastern people who have been in its dentention centres set up in Nauru in 2001.

The Australian immigration department says among the 276 people being processed in its Nauru camp are 83 children.

A department spokesman, Andrew Gavin, says because of recent changes in some parts of Afghanistan the application of some of those seeking refugee status are being reviewed.

"The reconsideration of some cases does not mean they will necessarily be found now to be refugees, but Australia's original refugee status assessment process on Nauru recognised that future developments in the home country might mean that refugee refusal decisions would need to be checked."

The departement says no decision has been reached yet but it says two Palestinians have been recognised as refugees by the UNHCR.

It also says while it won't identify the ethnicity of its interpreters the department says it has not used staff of Afghan origin.
