Solomons Deputy Commissioner calls on public to support police

10:10 am on 12 July 2004

Solomon Islands Deputy Police Commissioner, Ben McDevitt, has called on Solomon Islanders to support the police force following the significant reforms that have taken place.

Mr McDevitt was speaking at the opening of the new Ato'ifi Police Post in Malaita Province.

The Deputy Commissioner said it was time for a change in public perception about the police and he called on the public to support the police men and women serving the nation.

He acknowledged that some officers had corrupted the force and ruined its good reputation

But he says the organisation has gone through a vigorous and public cleansing which has seen the removal of hundreds of officers and seen large numbers of them arrested and charged with various offences.
