Tongan MP says prime minister failed to clarify sacking decision

4:33 pm on 9 September 2004

A Tongan pro-democracy MP, Akilisi Pohiva, says a statement by the prime minister has not eased concern over last month's sacking of three cabinet ministers.

Prince Ulakalala Lavaka Ata told national television the sackings were for the good of the country.

However, Mr Pohiva says the outcry over the lack of information continues.

"The problem with all the statements he made last night to the public was that they were too general and vague and after the interview, members of the public are more confused."

A protest march against the sackings is planned for next week.
