Cook Islands police continue search for missing body

4:50 pm on 28 October 2004

Police in the Cook Islands continue to search for the body of an Australian tourist who was swept out to sea while kayaking in the Arorangi lagoon on Sunday.

The police commissioner, Pira Wichman, says police recruits spent yesterday combing the lagoon and reef, on both sides of the Arorangi passage.

"The latest is that we are back on scene again today, we are combing the area for about a kilometre on either side of the passage where he went missing. And also we are doing an air search, that's about to start now and the maritime division will also comb the ocean or the area from about a kilometre out from the reef and they'll go as far as they can today."

Trevor Bish, who was in Rarotonga for the Oceania masters athletics championships with his wife and son, got into difficulty just after 3pm on Tuesday while in a kayak near the passage.

It is understood that the sea was rough at the time.

A paddle and kayak was recovered.
