Vanuatu to hear government appeal to stop no confidence vote

4:02 pm on 8 December 2004

The Vanuatu Court of Appeal will tomorrow morning hear an appeal from Serge Vohor's minority government, which is trying to stave off a vote of no confidence.

The Speaker had disallowed the vote last week, saying Mr Vohor was protected by a new constitutional change barring votes of no confidence 12 months either side of an election.

The Supreme Court ruled yesterday that the opposition could bring the motion and, and by mutual consent Parliament was to resume immediately.

But the government sought an appeal which was granted this morning.
