American Samoa lawmaker promotes departure tax

8:12 pm on 29 March 2005

A bill introduced in the American Samoa Senate by Senator Tuaolo Fruean seeks to apply a 20 dollar departure tax on all non-resident foreigners travelling by sea to Samoa.

If the bill is approved, the fee will not apply to cruise ships and ocean liners that include an American Samoa/Samoa segment on their itineraries.

Also exempt are those departing to attend weddings, funerals or conventions or taking vacations.

The burden of establishing that a person is leaving for these reasons will be the responsibility of the traveller.
