The French Polynesian opposition has hit out at President Oscar Temaru for meeting the French ambassador to the United Nations during a visit to New York.
The Tahoeraa Huiraatira has issued a statement, labelling Mr Temaru a liar for saying that the meeting was to discuss the development of tourism in French Polynesia.
The party says the ambassador has no role in tourism promotion but says Mr Temaru used the visit to push for French Polynesia to be reinscribed on the UN list of territories to be decolonised.
The Tahoeraa says Mr Temaru is developing an ambiguous position of seeking French financial assistance while stating that the territory no longer wants to be French.
Mr Temaru was in New York to promote the launch of direct flights to Papeete before travelling to Paris for talks with the French government this week.
