The acting foreign minister of Nauru, Godfrey Toma, says the president has met his Taiwanese counterpart.
Mr Toma says Ludwig Scotty met Chen Shui Bian when he visited the Marshall Islands capital, Majuro, for Constitution Day celebrations.
He says the presidents did talk and make each other's acquaintance, but he doesn't know if they talked about political ties.
Nauru was for many years an ally of Taiwan before switching allegiance to China.
Mr Toma says the issue of Nauru restoring links with Taiwan hasn't been discussed in cabinet.
