Taiwan hosts Tuvalu prime minister

8:24 pm on 25 May 2005

Taiwan has thanked Tuvalu for supporting Taiwan in the face of China's anti-secession law.

The Taiwanese president, Chen Shui-bian, is hosting Tuvalu's prime minister, Maatia Toafa, only weeks after making his first visit to Tuvalu.

Mr Chen also thanked Mr Toafa for supporting Taiwan's bid to join the UN at last September's UN General Assembly and for the backing for Taiwan's bid to join the World Health Organization.

Mr Chen made two trips to the Pacific this year to visit the five countries with diplomatic ties with Taipei.

Since then, Nauru has switched allegiance from China to Taiwan.
