The Fiji Labour Party says it will not support the prime minister to make constitutional changes which would take away gay rights.
Radio Legend says the Labour stand comes as members of the Methodist and Assemblies of God churches campaign for gay rights to be removed.
The Labour leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, has told the radio station that these rights are protected under the constitution and his party will respect that freedom.
Mr Chaudhry says the prime minister is playing Methodist politics, adding that it is not the fault of gays that they are born that way.
He says gay rights are being recognised universally now and they should be left alone.
Mr Chaudhry says Labour supports the provisions of the Constitution that make Fiji a discrimination free society.
He says rather than harassing and persecuting gays, the prime minister should be concentrating on people who are creating instability in Fiji by playing the race card.
