The residents in Labasa in Fiji's Northern Division are being warned to boil drinking water, following an increase in the number of diarrhoea and influenza cases.

The Director of the Northern Health Services, Dr Ami Chandra, says Labasa Hospital is currently treating 30 cases of diarrhoea and more than a hundred influenza cases per day following two weeks of flooding in the area.

He says however, he's confident the water situation will return to normal but has sent out a caution to the residents.

"We hope that the water supply situation improves for most of the people and we are advising people to boil drinking water and take medication in the early stages of their illness."
