Vanuatu government faces no confidence challenge

4:48 pm on 17 March 2006

The Vanuatu parliament is to vote on a motion of no confidence in the government of Ham Lini next week.

The parliament's secretariat says the motion is valid and will be put up for debate on Tuesday.

The move against the new coalition government comes amid disagreements over how to deal with kava exports.

Mr Lini sacked the agriculture minister, Barak Sope, over the matter.

For the motion to succeed it needs to be backed by a majority in the 52-member house.
