PNG parliament assists in leadership code challenges

The Papua New Guinea parliament will reimburse the legal costs of MPs referred by a leadership tribunal to face prosecution in criminal courts.

The Post Courier newspaper reports that the speaker Jeffrey Nape has told MPs that the House Committee of Parliament had made this decision last week.

Mr Nape said the committee resolved the National Parliament would reimburse the legal fees of the members who won their case when referred by the Leadership Tribunal to face the courts.

He said the House Committee has a policy in place to reimburse legal costs but it had not happened due to procurement procedures not being properly followed and in some instances claims were excessive.
