Governor Togiola Tulafono says he wants to explore how American Samoa can benefit from Chinese aid to South Pacific island countries.

His comments follow the recent trip China-Pacific Forum meeting where China has committed three billion US dollars in aid assistance to the South Pacific.

Togiola says while American Samoa cannot benefit directly from the assistance because it's not independent, he believes there is room for the territory to benefit through contact with island countries that receive the Chinese assistance.

The governor said he was putting together a team to look at ways to make that happen.

The governor also announced that he will visiting China in June following an invitation.

Togiola says the reason why China is aggressive with its aid to Pacific nations because they each have a vote in the United Nations.
