Counting is under way in Fiji after last week's election for a new 71-member parliament.

Four centres are tallying the ballot papers cast by just under half a million eligible voters.

First results are expected later today from those electorates with few voters or candidates.

The head of the Commonwealth Observer team, K. D. Knight of Jamaica, says the process is going well although there was a slow start at one office.

"I did observe that there was one room where the counting ought to have started at 8 o'clock and when I left that particular area at 8.20, they had not yet commenced."
