French Polynesia's cabinet director, Patrick Leboucher, has announced that he will stand as a candidate in next year's French parliamentary elections.

Mr Leboucher is standing in one of the territory's two seats in the French lower house.

He was rehired as cabinet secretary by President Oscar Temaru last year despite successfully suing him for improper dismissal in 2004 when the Temaru government was ousted in a no-confidence vote.

Mr Leboucher won as compensation the equivalent of 14 annual pays of the minimum wage.

The Tahitipresse news agency says Mr Leboucher's candidacy has the support of the Aia Api Party whose leader is still in the territorial assembly despite having been given a suspended jail sentence for corruption.
