Pacific countries urged to keep targets in fight against AIDS

Thirteen Pacific Island countries at the United Nations in New York are being urged not to lose sight of basic promises made five years ago to fight AIDS.

The founder of the Pacific Islands AIDS Foundation, Maire Bopp, says the promises are in danger of being lost in an increasingly complicated review process.

Ms Bopp says the special session - known as UNGASS - set just four percentage based targets.

However, under UNGASS plus five, 191 member countries of the United Nations will be asked to review more than two dozen core indicators added in 2003.

Ms Bopp says the foundation is concerned that members will lose sight of the few concrete targets set at the 2001 meeting.

One target includes lowering new infections to 25 percent of young men and women between the ages of 15 and 24.

Ms Bopp says very few countries will be able to report success at this target and that member nations should be held accountable for this failure.
