Fiji land lease woes labelled human tragedy

Fiji's vice president has described the expiry of land leases in the country and the displacement of thousands of people as a human tragedy.

The Daily Post quotes Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi as saying that it is time Fiji's society may well need to consider how notions of land ownership can be harmonized with provisions for adequate shelter and housing.

Ratu Joni admitted his suggestions may well be disliked by many in the community.

But, he said, the point is that Fiji needs to find a solution that is all encompassing so that it does not have to revisit this problems every few generations with its accompanying problem of displacement.

Ratu Joni was speaking at the annual meeting of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions now under way in Suva
