Fiji chamber of commerce backs medical tourism plan

6:52 pm on 10 August 2006

There is support from the Fiji Chamber of Commerce for a proposal to develop medical tourism in the country.

The chamber's president, Taito Waradi, says discussions are under way with the Apollo Group, a large healthcare company in India which operates 45 hospitals and a number of clinics.

He says Apollo has secured a site in Lautoka, close to tourist resorts and the international airport at Nadi.

Mr Waradi says the development of medical tourism would be good for Fiji because the tourism market can be very unpredictable.

"We've had record numbers of visitor arrivals coming to the country in the last few years. Now, Bali, I know, and other destinations have come out and are now promoting their destinations quite aggressively, and quite effectively. So, in the not too distant future we should see an erosion of the market that we have at this point in time."
