CNMI reduces street lighting to save money

To further save on costs the cash-strapped CNMI government now plans to turn off the lights in some Saipan streets.

The Department of Public Works and Commonwealth Utilities Corp. has been given the job of deciding which lights can be turned off without putting public safety at risk.

The government's press secretary Charles Reyes Jr., says the survey will strike a balance between the need to save money and the need for adequate lighting in some areas of concern.

Burglary incidents have been on the rise recently, with some of the cases involving tourists.
