Vanuatu police have arrested 21 people and confiscated more than 40 bags of marijuana in what is believed to a record marijuana haul in Vanuatu.

The Daily Post says police acted on a tip off.

They used the patrol boat RVS Tukoro to sail to Malekula to raid an isolated village which they described as a hot spot for marijuana.

Detective inspector George Towmey said the village has been farming marijuana for many years and everyone in the village from children to grandparents planted marijuana.

Inspector Towmey says the village has about 250 people and they each had two gardens of marijuana.

He said the bags of marijuana brought to Port Vila was only a sample to get the government to realise the magnitude of the cultivation of the drug.
