Solomon Islands to review public pension scheme

12:44 pm on 8 December 2006

The Solomon Islands government is embarking on a review of the public pension scheme.

In a bid to start the review, the Governor General, Sir Nathaniel Waena, has held discussions with the government statistician and the Ministry of Finance.

The SIBC reports that Sir Nathaniel, as the legal responsible officer of the Pensions Increase Act, is reminding the government to comply with the requirement of the law.

Government House says under the Act, pensioners should also be given the equivalent of pay increase awards each time such awards are given to serving public officers.

It says no increases have been given to pensioners since 1993 even though public officers have been given pay increases.
