Former American Samoa government official released after 15 months

A former American Samoa government official has been released from a federal jail in Califonia after serving 15 months for his role in the awarding of government contracts.

The former deputy director of the Department of Health and Human Services, Patolo Mageo pleaded guilty two years ago to approving or directing others to approve the awarding of several DHSS contracts that were valued more than 10,000 US dollars each to certain contractors.

In exchange Mageo received more than $1,000 in cash in kickbacks.

Mageo goes on three years supervised release and will have to pay 41,000 thousand dollars in restitution.
