Fiji flood water recede but more rain likely

5:58 pm on 12 March 2007

Four people are now confirmed to be dead and at least one person is still missing after renewed flooding in Fiji's north and west over the weekend.

It is the second time this year that these areas have been hit by floods.

The floods have receded in most parts, but homes and food crops have been damaged or destroyed, and a major clean up is under way.

A Nadi weather forecaster, Alipate Waqaicelua, says the rain will continue over the next few days and more flooding is likely.

"Flash flooding of low-lying areas is still likely, particularly in the north. If the rain does get thicker and spread around the group, which is very likely, flash flooding for most parts of Fiji, particularly the low lying areas is expected."

Alipate Waqaicelua says the rain is expected to ease on Thursday.
