The Papua New Guinea Treasury department says the government has posted a budget surplus of US$153 million or 2-point-5 percent of the gross domestic product last year.

The Treasury Department Secretary Simon Tosali said this money had already been used to pay debts.

He said the budget surplus was reflected in the Treasury Department's new final budget outcome document for 2006.

He said it had been earlier estimated that the budget would reflect a deficit of US$32 million or 0.6% of the GDP.

The National newspaper reports revenues were earned from higher mineral and petroleum taxes and dividends, stemming from Papua New Guinea's major export commodities.
