PNG politician says agriculture has to become the driver of country's economy

There's a call for a new economic direction in Papua New Guinea to give people in rural areas more opportunity.

The leader of the Kantri Pati, Jamie Maxtone Graham, says around four million people live subsistent rural lifestyles without proper infrastructure or full access to education or credit.

He says the continuing reliance on oil and minerals is artifical and speculative when what the country needs is to harness its agricultural potential to create wealth and opportunity for all.

"We want to build an economic engine for this country. Successive governments have become addicted to revenue coming from mining projects and oil. Our economy is very superficial. It is an artificial economy. You know, these big projects, a dozen big projects, they don't provide many jobs and its not sustainable and its non-renewable."
