Solomon Islands government to review Public Service Commission

6:52 am on 22 May 2007

The Solomon Islands government is planning to review the country's public service commission after its commissioner criticised the government's appointment of a new police commissioner.

Jahir Khan of Fiji was sworn in as police commisioner last week, but the Public Service Commission's chair, Edmund Andresen, has voiced concern over the appointment, saying the correct recruitment regulations were not followed.

The previous police commissioner, Australian Shane Castles, was declared an undesirable immigrant when he was on his Christmas break.

The prime minister's secretary, John Roughan, says the government did follow the necessary procedures and stresses the commission should be more in line with the government's views.

"Government is trying to review the public service commission and commissioner, because there is an inability to think as the government is thinking. There is a strong movement now to review the commissions values in their latest decision. It is something that the government is not taking lightly."
