7:11 am on 13 June 2007

Papua New Guinea's Agriculture and Livestock minister has called on Australia and Japan to provide $US1 billion yearly to Pacific nations to help protect the environment.

The Post Courier newspaper reports that Sasa Zibe says both Japan and Australia are industrialised countries whose activities contributed to the conditions that caused climate change.

The former environment and conservation minister says both countries should pay the Pacific countries to maintain and save their environments as well as adapt to the changes.

He says otherwise a desperate PNG government will chop down the last remaining old-growth rainforest of the Pacific

He says many Pacific nations, including PNG, are facing dire consequences of climate change including rising sea levels, droughts, floods and declining crop production.
