The French navy has escorted a cargo ship flying a Kiribati flag back to France on suspicion that it sank a fishing boat.

The cargo ship is alleged to have continued on its journey despite distress signals from the fisherman.

The Reuters newsagency says the owner of the French fishing boat drowned in the incident which happened off the west coast of France last week.

Six members of the crew had to be rescued from a life raft.

The freighter, Ocean Jasper, which is Turkish owned, agreed to go with the French authorities after photos were taken of its bow showing signs of paint from the trawler.
